For those that are fretting over missing out on a few days of PSL or having to wait a little longer for the IPL just because of those towering sixers, you wished you were there at Alpha engineering college ground in Chennai, India today to witness the all-round performance of Muthu of Chennai Strikers, player of the match of the super league match round 1 of the WCF 30 overs summer tournament.
Batting first, Chennai scored a competitive 155 in 24.5 overs before they were all out. Vimal Kumar treated the spectators to a boundary-filled inning of 35 runs (36 balls, 8x4), ably supported by Thiyagu 16 (26 balls, 1x6), Gopi 19 (23 balls, 2x4), Bharath 19 (27 balls, 2x4), and Vignesh 18 (13 balls, 2x4, 1x6). Muthu took 5 wickets for 24 runs and was the destructor-in-chief as Chennai Strikers kept pegging back at Chennai Aces' trying to amp their scoring rate.
In response, Chennai Strikers started their run chase confidently thanks to the watchful-yet-aggressive start by Viki and Muthu who both added 44 runs for the first wicket when Viki was caught by Senthil. Nothing other than seeing the use of 9 bowlers by Chennai Aces can explain how hard they fought in trying to ensure Chennai Strikers don't have a free run, but with Muthu's marauding like there is no tomorrow with 77 (57 balls, 8x4, 5x6, SR 135.09) Chennai Aces couldn't do much but feel enthralled by his innings. With Krishna's chipping in with 32 from 30 balls (4x4, 1x6), the match was well sealed by Chennai Strikers, who have now opened their accounts in the points table.
At the end of 3 matches, in the league phase, Fine Leg CC is topping the points table with 2 points from 1 win in the only match they played and a net run rate of 0.66, closely followed by All-star CC at 0.37. With players like Muthu in their arsenal, teams are lining up to flex their muscles as the WCF 30 over summer cup is truly setting ablaze this otherwise-quiet suburb of Chennai.
